The Computer Engineering department is part of the School of Engineering, together with the Computer Science; Electrical Engineering; Informations Systems Management; Bioinformations; Biomolecular Engineering; and Applied Mathematics and Statistics departments. There is close collaboration between the faculty of all departments, creating a collegial environment for research. The Computer Engineering department, and the School of Engineering, are growing at a fast rate.

University of California, Santa Cruz, is located on the Pacific Coast of California, just over a hill from Silicon Valley. The School of Engineering, like much of the campus, is located in the midst of a forest of giant redwood trees. The campus is of great natural beauty, set in the midst of natural parks, and hills overlooking the ocean. The weather and beaches of Santa Cruz are world-famous. Yet, in spite of this idyllic settings, the campus is very close to the Bay area: driving distances are 1 hour to Silicon Valley, 1 hour to Stanford, 1 hour to San Francisco, and 1.5 hours to Berkeley. Considering that Silicon Valley to Berkeley is 1.25 hours, you could almost say that Santa Cruz is in the Bay Area.
